I. The Phase Transition

It happened while most of us weren't paying attention.

For the past several years, people deep inside AI development have been trying to tell the rest of us that something extraordinary was coming. They weren't describing the next iPhone or another social media platform. They were describing a phase transition, the kind of shift where the rules that govern a system change all at once. Mainstream media mostly ignored them, but the technology kept advancing.

Now, a recent article in Nature, by four researchers spanning philosophy, computer science, linguistics, and cognitive science, argues plainly that artificial general intelligence has arrived. These authors write that the vision of human-level machine intelligence Alan Turing described in 1950 is a reality. They compare the moment to Copernicus displacing Earth from the center of the cosmos, and Darwin displacing humans from a privileged place in nature. This, they argue, is the third great displacement: humans are no longer the only form of general intelligence on the planet.

You can debate the definitions. You can argue about whether what these machines do constitutes "real" intelligence. But what you can't argue with is this: one person managing AI agents already does the work of five or more. Entire professions are being reorganized in months, not decades. The S&P 500 companies are posting record revenues while cutting headcount. This year, college graduates are entering a job market that is actively shrinking beneath their feet.

And the conversation happening around all of this, on YouTube, in podcasts, in anxious group chats, keeps circling the same point without ever quite landing on it. People talk about jobs. They talk about the economy. They talk about regulation and safety and alignment. But underneath all of that is a question that almost nobody says out loud:

What am I worth if a machine can do what I do?

That question points to the real crisis. Not an economic one, but an existential one. People aren't just worried about losing their job, they're worried about losing the reasons why they matter. When your usefulness to the group disappears, something fundamental breaks inside, and no severance package can fix it.

Interestingly, the question starts to change shape when you actually sit down and work with these tools. Something shifts when you discover that you can build things you couldn't build before, that your ideas can take form in ways that weren't possible a year ago. The crisis is real, but it isn't the whole story.


II. The Genealogy of Inversions

The entrepreneur and AI CEO Emad Mostaque describes human economic history as a series of inversions, moments when the primary source of value in a civilization shifts so dramatically that everything built on the old foundation has to be rebuilt.

The Agricultural Inversion. For most of human existence, value meant land. Whoever controlled the most fertile ground controlled the economy. Then we learned to build machines, and value shifted from land to labor. Millions of farmers became factory workers. The transition was brutal and took generations, but humans adapted. They climbed from the fields into the factories.

The Industrial Inversion. Physical labor dominated for two centuries, until the mid-twentieth century made it clear that what you knew mattered more than what you could lift. Value shifted from labor to knowledge. Factory workers became office workers. Muscles gave way to minds. Again, the transition was painful, again it took decades, and again humans adapted by climbing one rung higher on the ladder of abstraction.

The Information Inversion. In the digital age, it wasn't enough to know things. What mattered was how information was organized, connected, and distributed. Value shifted from individual knowledge to networked intelligence. A company like WhatsApp could be worth nineteen billion dollars with fifty-five employees, because value had migrated from things and processes to the invisible architecture of the network itself.

Each of these inversions followed the same pattern: the old source of value was disrupted, and people then climbed to the next level. From land to muscles, from muscles to minds, from individual minds to connected networks. Now we've arrived at the fourth inversion, which Mostaque calls The Intelligence Inversion. And this one is different from all the others in two important ways.

The first difference is speed. Previous inversions unfolded over decades or centuries whereas this one is measured in months. The gap between ChatGPT's release and its transformation of entire industries was around three years.

But the more important difference is finality. Every previous inversion left humans somewhere to go. When land lost its primacy, we moved to labor. When labor was automated, we moved to knowledge. When knowledge was commoditized, we moved to networks. Each time, there was a higher rung on the ladder to climb to.

So the question becomes: what's above cognition?

When intelligence itself becomes a commodity that can be copied infinitely, never gets tired, improves recursively, and costs a fraction of a human salary, there is no higher rung — at least not one that the current economy explicitly values. This is the last inversion, or as Mostaque calls his book, The Last Economy. Not because technology will stop advancing, but because the thing being automated is the very capacity we've always used to adapt to the previous inversions.

For the first time in economic history, we face a transition with no obvious landing place — at least not one that is valued in the current economy.


III. The Ontological Crisis

The responses being offered right now are almost entirely external, and almost entirely inadequate.

Universal basic income addresses material survival but says nothing about meaning. A person with a monthly check and no sense of purpose is not liberated. We already know what happens when people lose meaningful struggle without gaining something to replace it. The gambling industry knows. The opioid crisis knows. The hikikomori phenomenon in Japan, where over a million young people have simply withdrawn from society, knows.

"Learn to code" was the advice of the last decade, and it's already becoming obsolete. AI writes code now, much better than the vast majority of professional programmers. The chief executive of one of the world's largest coding platforms says a single person with agentic AI tools already replaces a team of five developers. OpenAI has directed all employees to code via AI agents by March 31, 2026, banning direct, manual use of editors or terminals. The retraining treadmill spins faster than anyone can run on it.

When people lose their foothold, an entire economy stands ready to absorb their attention. Algorithmic feeds, companion apps, and immersive virtual worlds are engineered not just to entertain but to sustain engagement indefinitely, and they are very good at what they do. The business model depends on people who have nowhere else to direct their energy, and that population is growing.

And political rage, which is surging everywhere, is a revealing response telling us something true about the scale of what people are feeling. When meaning is threatened, people reach for something to fight for, an enemy to organize against, a sense that their energy still matters. That impulse is understandable and deeply human.But it is important to turn that energy into a plan.

Every one of these responses treats the AI transition as an external problem, something happening to the economy, to the job market, to society. And so they offer external fixes: more money, different skills, better policies, louder protests.

The deeper problem isn't that people lack the right skills. It's what happens inside a person when the scaffolding they've built their identity on, their profession, their expertise, their sense of usefulness, falls away. When the answer to "what do you do?" no longer connects to the answer to "who are you?"

That's not an economic problem, it's an ontological one. And no policy can solve it from the outside.


IV. The Work That Matters Now

I'm an Earth scientist and I have spent my career studying what happens when systems are stressed to the point of change. Given enough time, most systems can evolve progressively into configurations that remain stable. But if the stress is applied too quickly, the system can be broken and what arises from the fragments may not resemble the original structure.

I see a lot of parallels when I think about humans facing the AI transition. The external forces are coming regardless of what any of us do, and they are coming fast. The question is whether we are prepared to reorganize creatively rather than break.

There are thousands of people working on AI safety, thousands more working on economic policy, conferences and commissions and think tanks devoted to the structural dimensions of what is coming. But almost no one is asking the question that precedes all the others: how do we prepare the inner lives of the individual people who will live through it?

And there is a related question that almost no one is connecting to the first: how do we help people engage with the technology itself, not as passive consumers but as active builders? Because the inner work and the outer engagement are not separate tracks. They are the same practice. When you sit down with these tools and build something, whether it's a website, a research project, a piece of music, or a business idea, you discover capabilities you didn't know you had. That experience changes the existential equation. The question stops being "what am I worth if a machine can do what I do?" and starts becoming "what can I create now that I couldn't create before?" Emad Mostaque puts it directly: spend an hour a day with the agentic tools, not just chatbots, and you will be ahead of nearly everyone. The lie, he says, is that only the big companies can build with this technology. Once you try, you realize that isn't true.

V. The Reframe

For centuries, we've externalized our sense of purpose into work, productivity, and specialized knowledge. We've told ourselves that our value is what we produce. The cognitive economy demanded this, and we complied, often at the cost of capacities that make us most fully human: deep creativity, contemplation, genuine connection, the kind of knowing that can't be measured or automated.

The last inversion strips all of that away. And what it reveals, if we're willing to look, is that those capacities were always there. They were suppressed by an economy that had no use for them. Mostaque observes that our jobs were designed to turn us into machines, and obviously the machines will be better than we are at being machines. Humans have transitioned from labor to leverage, and now we must make the only transformation that is left: to meaning.

I've come to believe, after years of studying natural and human systems, that the AI transition is not primarily a catastrophe; it is primarily a liberation, but only if we prepare for it. When you can no longer define yourself by what you produce for the economy, you're free to discover the deeper aspects of yourself that make you human. This moment represents one of the most profound opportunities in our history, but it requires preparation. It requires inner infrastructure that can withstand the loss of external validation. It requires the willingness to do the difficult, unglamorous work of self-understanding: the dream work, the shadow work, the slow cultivation of a relationship with the parts of yourself that no machine can replicate or replace.

And it requires getting your hands on the technology. Not as a spectator, not as a critic, but as a participant. The people who will navigate this transition best are the ones doing both: the inner work of self-understanding and the outer work of building, experimenting, and discovering what becomes possible when human creativity has tools this powerful at its disposal.

That's what remains distinctly human, and that's what we cultivate here.
